Dog Walk Essentials: Waste Pickup Done Right

Picking up after your dog is the least interesting part of ownership and one of the few with genuine public health consequences. It is also the part most likely to get you a fine.

Why it is not just about tidiness

Dog waste carries parasites and bacteria that transmit to other dogs and, in some cases, to people — children playing on grass are the usual concern. Roundworm eggs in particular survive in soil for a very long time, well beyond the point where anything visible remains. Waste left near drains or watercourses also ends up in them. None of this applies to a bag in a bin, which is why the rule exists.

What to carry

• More bags than you think you need. Two dogs, long walk, upset stomach — the day you carry one bag is the day you need three.
• A dispenser clipped to the lead, so the bags are attached to the thing you always take.
• Hand sanitiser for the walk home.
• A tie or clip if you dislike carrying a bag by hand for the rest of the route.

About biodegradable claims

Worth knowing: bags marketed as biodegradable often do not meaningfully break down in a sealed landfill, which is where most of them end up. Conditions there — no light, little oxygen — are not what those materials need. Some are genuinely compostable under industrial conditions that your local waste stream may or may not provide. It is not a reason to avoid them, just a reason not to assume the label solves the problem.

The technique, for completeness

Bag over the hand like a glove, pick up, invert the bag around it, tie. Doing it in one motion keeps everything on the inside, which matters more in cold weather when you would rather not repeat the exercise.

The garden is a different job

A daily walk-around with a scooper is far easier than a monthly excavation, and it matters more than people expect: parasite eggs accumulate in soil where waste sits, and they persist long after the visible mess is gone. A long-handled tool exists so that this takes thirty seconds rather than becoming a task you postpone.

Disposal

Bins, always. A tied bag left beside a path or hung on a branch is worse than nothing — it will not break down and someone else has to deal with it. And keep pet waste out of your garden compost; domestic compost heaps do not reach the temperatures needed to make it safe for anything you would grow food in.

A daily health check nobody asks for

You are looking at this every day anyway, so you may as well notice. Consistency, colour, blood, mucus, anything visibly moving, or straining without result are all worth registering. Sudden persistent changes justify a call to the vet, and you will spot them days earlier than someone who has never paid attention.
