Almost every owner has bought a bed their pet ignored in favour of the sofa, a cardboard box, or the floor next to it. The bed is rarely the problem — the mismatch usually is.
Watch how they sleep before you buy
Sleeping position tells you the shape to buy, and it is the single most useful thing you can observe:
- Curled into a ball: a bolstered or donut bed with raised sides gives the contact they are looking for.
- Sprawled flat on their side or back: raised sides are an obstruction. A flat mattress-style bed is better.
- Burrowing under blankets: a covered or hooded bed, or one with a loose blanket to dig into.
- Head propped on something: a bolster along one edge does the job.
Location beats the bed itself
Pets choose places before they choose furniture. Most want to be near you, able to see the room, out of the main path of traffic, and away from draughts. A cheap bed in the right spot gets used; an expensive one in a quiet back room does not. If your pet already has a favourite place, put the bed there rather than deciding where they ought to sleep.
Size
Measure your pet stretched out and add some margin. The common mistake is buying to the shape they make when curled up, then discovering there is nowhere to stretch on a warm night. Cats are the exception — many actively prefer something slightly snug.
Older pets need support
Soft and squashy is not kind to arthritic joints; it lets them sink and makes getting up harder. Firm supportive foam and a low or open entry point matter far more than plushness for a senior pet. If your dog has started sleeping on the floor after years of using a bed, the bed has probably flattened past the point of being useful.
The feature that actually matters day to day
A removable, machine-washable cover. Beds absorb hair, dander and whatever came in on the paws, and one that has to be washed whole — or cannot be washed at all — gets cleaned far less often than it should. This is worth more in practice than any premium material.
Getting them to use it
Put something that smells of you or of them on it, and resist washing that item straight away. Reward them for choosing it themselves rather than lifting them onto it. And never use the bed as a place they get sent to when they have done something wrong — a bed has to mean safety, or it means nothing.
Cats want options
Cats rotate sleeping spots and value height and enclosure more than dogs do. One perfect bed is a less successful strategy than several acceptable places, at least one of them elevated.
When to replace it
When it no longer springs back, when the cover no longer comes clean, or when your pet starts sleeping next to it instead of on it. That last one is the clearest signal there is.
